The NOAA Ship Delaware II pulled out of Woods Hole, MA, on May 3rd with eight researchers aboard from NEFSC, WHOI, and Georgia Department of Natural Resources.  Researchers hope to find concentrations of Northern Atlantic right whales in the Great South Channel.

Researchers are focusing on Northern Atlantic right whale prey, zooplankton called copepods, and how their distribution in the water column affects the whale’s behavior.  They will also be working on photo-identification of individual whales and have the opportunity to biopsy sample animals that are only seen in the Great South Channel.
