Excellent weather brings lots of sightings

On June 6, the Northeast Fisheries Science Ccnter’s (NEFSC) aerial survey team aboard the NOAA Twin Otter surveyed Howell Swell in the Gulf of Maine and observed 2 fin whales, 17 sei whales, 5 Atlantic white-sided dolphins, 1 harbor porpoise, and 83 basking sharks.  They also saw 27 North Atlantic right whales, including a mom and calf pair. Some of the right whales were feeding with sei whales.

Atlantic white-sided dolphins and basking sharks were among the species sighted during the NEFSC’s aerial survey team flight in the Great South Channel – SCOPEX South on June 7.  With excellent flying conditions the team observed 17 pilot whales, 159 Atlantic white-sided dolphins, 40 humpback whales, 21 sei whales, 3 fin whales, 2 minke whales, and 53 basking sharks. Two right whales were also sighted.
