Lots of whales and basking sharks

A survey of the Great South Channel – SCOPEX North brought lots of sightings June 8 for the NEFSC aerial survey team, part of the Protected Species Branch at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center’s Woods Hole Laboratory.  The team observed 58 humpbacks, 19 fin whales, 46 sei whales, 6 minke whales, 2 harbor porpoise, 98 basking sharks, and 3 ocean sunfish. Eleven North Atlantic right whales were also sighted, including mom and calf pairs and several right whales lobtailing.

A June 9 aerial survey in Franklin Basin sighted 5 humpback whales, 8 fin whales, 5 sei whales, 6 minke whales, 57 pilot whales, 45 Atlantic white-sided dolphins, and 39 basking sharks.  One North Atlantic right whale was sighted.
