Lots of variety in sightings by the NEFSC aerial survey team on July 26 and 27 as they continue working in Canadian waters. During nearly five and a half hours in the air on July 26, the team saw 8 humpback whales, 5 fin whales, 2 sperm whales, 2 minke whales, 29 pilot whales, 2 common dolphins, 6 Risso’s dolphins, 1 basking shark, 1 leatherback turtle, and 44 ocean sunfish. No right whales were sighted in the survey of Emerald and Lehave South and Scotian Shelf East areas.
No right whales were sighted July 27 during a seven-hour flight in excellent to good conditions on Canso Bank, and along the edge of the coastline during the return transit to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The team did see 1 humpback whale, 2 fin whales, 3 minke whales, 1 basking shark, 7 leatherback turtles, and 24 ocean sunfish.
