Lots of dolphins, but no right whales

The Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) aerial survey team have been busy flying, weather permitting, during the holidays.  A survey on December 27, 2014 on Howell Swell lasted almost 4 and a half hours, during which  1 minke whale, 3 harbor porpoise, and 1 basking shark were sighted. One dead pilot whale was also observed.

A few days later, on December 30, team members conducted a nearly six-hour survey on Cashes Ledge, although their initial destination was Jordan Basin and Jeffrey’s Bank. The location was changed after the team initially flew to Jordan Basin but changed the flight plan due to a high sea state in the planned survey area. The team observed 1 fin whale, 13 harbor porpoise, 6 pilot whales, 2 offshore bottlenose dolphins, 25 common dolphins,  and 35 Risso’s dolphins  No right whales were sighted.

On January 3, 2015, the team conducted a survey of Jordan Basin and Jeffrey’s Bank, sighting 10 Atlantic white-sided dolphins but no right whales.
