We’re Flying Again!

The Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) aerial survey group began flying again March 16, with a survey of Rhode Island Sound. One humpback and one right whale were observed during the three and a half hour flight in the NOAA Twin Otter.

The group will conduct surveys of areas off the Northeast U.S. coast through July.  A number of seasonal management areas are in effect, and mariners are alerted to a dynamic management area south of Martha’s Vineyard that is in effect through March 28, 2015.

One of the North Atlantic right whales seen June 29, 2014 by the NEFSC aerial survey group and photographed by member Peter Duley was entangled in fishing gear and has met a tragic end, reported in a New England Aquarium blog post on March 13.
