More whales, lots of dolphins

One humpback whale, 10 Atlantic white-sided dolphins and 3 harbor porpoise were observed during a March 30 aerial survey of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. No North Atlantic right whales were sighted.

Poor weather delayed flights until April 6,  when the  team took to the air for a survey along the southern Georges Shelf break, south of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, between Block and Veatch Canyons.  Although no right whales were sighted during the more than 5-hour flight, the survey team observed 5 fin whales, 1 sei whale, 1 humpback whale, 2 minke whales, 64 Risso’s dolphin, 470 common dolphins, 53 bottlenose dolphins, 2 blue sharks, 5 basking sharks, and 12 ocean sunfish.

The Center’s Interactive North Atlantic Right Whale Sightings Map  provides more information about recent sightings and indicates locations of seasonal management areas as well as dynamic management areas.
